Why Rabbit Predator-Proofing Means Six Sides, Not Four

This is genuinely different from every other calculator on this site: a rabbit enclosure needs protection on all six sides, including the floor. Raccoons, weasels, snakes, and digging predators will exploit any gap that "looks impossibly small," and a hutch or run that's only fenced on the four upright sides leaves the ground itself as the weak point. A raised hutch on legs solves this for the sleeping/nesting area directly; an attached ground-level exercise run needs its own wire or buried floor protection, the same buried-apron logic used for poultry runs elsewhere on this site, but applied underneath the whole run, not just the perimeter.

Step-by-Step Build Method

1. Mark out the hutch and run footprint. Position the hutch out of direct afternoon sun and away from prevailing wind and rain.
2. Build the raised hutch frame. Treated pine frame, raised on legs at least 45-60cm off the ground — this helps with both predator protection and keeping the hutch dry.
3. Fit a wire floor with a resting mat. Wire flooring lets droppings fall through for easy cleaning, but always add a solid resting board or mat so rabbits aren't standing on wire full-time — this prevents sore hocks, a genuinely common welfare issue in poorly-designed hutches.
4. Clad and roof the hutch. Fit solid cladding and a weatherproof roof, with good ventilation — ammonia buildup from droppings causes real respiratory problems if airflow is poor.
5. Fit the exercise run with floor protection. Attach a run at ground level, with wire or mesh across the entire floor, not just buried at the edges — this is the step most builds skip and the one that actually stops digging predators.
6. Fit upright mesh walls to the run. Fully enclosed on all sides including the top, since rabbits are prey animals for aerial predators too.
7. Add a nest box for does. A separate enclosed nesting box within the hutch, lined with straw, is needed for any doe that may have a litter.
8. Fit doors, latches, and a final check. Check every side, including underneath, for any gap a predator could exploit.
