Can I grow onions and garlic from supermarket bulbs?
You can with garlic (it's how many home growers start), but it's worth choosing an Australian-grown, disease-free bulb rather than an imported one, since imported garlic isn't always suited to local growing conditions or free of soil-borne disease.
Why aren't my onions forming proper bulbs?
Onions are day-length sensitive — a variety bred for the wrong day length for your region will grow lots of green top and little to no bulb. Match the variety (short-day, intermediate, or long-day) to your latitude.
